Swedish Jansson’s Temptation: Creamy Potato and Anchovy Casserole

Jansson’s Temptation, known in Sweden as “Janssons frestelse,” is a classic Scandinavian dish that’s hearty and packed with flavor. This creamy potato and anchovy casserole is perfect for special occasions or comforting family dinners. The combination of thinly sliced potatoes, onions, and anchovy fillets, all baked in a creamy sauce, creates a truly irresistible dish.

Ingredients:
2 lbs (900g) of potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
2 onions, thinly sliced
1 can (2 oz) of anchovy fillets, drained and minced
1 ½ cups (360 ml) of heavy cream
½ cup (120 ml) of milk
3 tbsp of butter
Salt and pepper to taste
½ cup of breadcrumbs

Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. Butter a baking dish. You can use a medium-sized casserole dish.
3. Layer half of the potatoes in the buttered dish. Top with half of the onions and half of the anchovies. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, onions, and anchovies.
5. In a small saucepan, heat the cream and milk until warm, careful not to boil.
6. Pour the creamy mixture over the potatoes, ensuring they’re well covered.
7. Dot the top of the casserole with small pieces of butter and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
9. Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your Jansson’s Temptation warm as a main dish or side.
